Music to Level Up Your Day: Far Cry 5

I don't know much about musical theory, nor am I a musically inclined person. However, I do love to listen to video game soundtracks. They can be a powerful listening experiences in their own right, or be as evocative as the scores composed for film. Each of these posts will feature a sampling of music tracks from a single game title, or series/franchise in some rare cases.

Composer: Dan Romer

North American Release Date: March 2018

The game takes place in Hope County, a fictional region of Montana, United States. The main story revolves around the Project at Eden's Gate, a doomsday cult that has taken over the county at the command of its powerful leader, Joseph Seed. An unnamed junior deputy sheriff trapped in Hope County takes it upon himself to work alongside factions of a resistance movement to liberate the county from Eden's Gate.

The team wanted the music in the background to reflect the nature of the cult, so that the player would experience the cult's messaging throughout the game. They created hymn-like gospel music with lyrics that described the cult's end-of-the-world teachings. The style of the music would shift as the player entered regions controlled by different cult members, from country to glam rock to industrial music, representing how the hymns of Joseph Seed changed to suit his followers personal preferences.

"You judge me. Judge us. For the things we've done. People say that I'm crazy. But when you look upon the world, and see the same things that I do, do your eyes not fill with horror? THIS IS THE WORLD? THIS IS THE HOME WE BUILT FOR OUR CHILDREN?" - Jacob Seed
