Music to Level Up Your Day: Dragon Age: Origins

I don't know much about musical theory, nor am I a musically inclined person. However, I do love to listen to video game soundtracks. Who doesn't? They can be a powerful listening experience in their own right, or be as evocative as the scores composed for film. Each of these posts will feature music tracks from a single game title, or series/franchise in some rare cases.

Composer: Inon Zur

Singer: Aubrey Ashburn

North American Release Date: November 2009

Set in the fictional kingdom of Ferelden during a period of civil unrest, the game puts the player in the role of a warrior, mage, or rogue coming from an elven, human, or dwarven background. The player character is recruited into the Grey Wardens, an ancient order that stands against bestial forces known as "Darkspawn", and is tasked with defeating the Archdemon that commands them.

The soundtrack was recorded with a 44-piece orchestra, recorded twice and merged to sound like an 88-piece orchestra. Zur wanted the soundtrack to feel "dark", combining low brass and bass string instruments with ancient drums to express a feeling that was both heroic and demonic.
